'Book of' slots: one book, one expanding symbol
'Book of' slots share one formula. A book symbol acts as both wild and scatter, three or more books start free spins, and before the spins begin one symbol is chosen to expand over whole reels whenever it lands.

Short answer
How does a 'Book of' slot pay?
In the base game it is a simple 5-reel, 10-line slot. The value is in free spins: the chosen symbol expands to fill its reel and pays on all lines, even on reels that are not next to each other. That is why most 'Book of' slots are high volatility.

How it works
The 'Book of' formula, step by step
Three books start free spins
In Book of Dead three or more books award 10 free spins, and books can retrigger them.
A symbol is chosen to expand
When enough of that symbol lands, it covers whole reels and pays on every line.
What it means: A premium expanding symbol on all five reels is where the top wins come from.

FAQ
Which was the first 'Book of' slot?
The format was made popular by Novomatic's Book of Ra in land-based casinos before online versions such as Play'n GO's Book of Dead spread it.
Are 'Book of' slots high volatility?
Most are, because so much of the return depends on the expanding symbol in free spins. Expect long runs of small or no wins.
Is the RTP the same at every casino?
Not always. Play'n GO and other studios offer several RTP versions, and the casino chooses one. The info screen in the game shows the version you are playing.
