A wagering requirement is the number of times you must bet a bonus (or the bonus plus your deposit, or your free spin winnings) before the money can be withdrawn. A KSh 1,000 bonus at 35x means KSh 35,000 in bets first. Every one of those bets carries the slot's house edge, so the requirement has a price you can work out before you opt in.

This guide shows how to calculate the total, what it costs at different RTPs, the break-even point, and which slots suit wagering.

How wagering requirements work

Bonus money and free spin winnings usually sit in a bonus balance. You can play with it, but you cannot withdraw it until the wagering is complete. If the time limit runs out first, the remaining bonus balance and any winnings from it are removed.

The multiple can apply to different amounts, and the difference is large:

Bonus typeWhat is wageredExampleTotal bets required
Deposit bonus, bonus onlyBonus × multipleKSh 1,000 bonus at 30xKSh 30,000
Deposit bonus, deposit + bonus(Deposit + bonus) × multipleKSh 1,000 + KSh 1,000 at 30xKSh 60,000
Free spinsWinnings × multipleKSh 300 won at 10xKSh 3,000
No-deposit bonusBonus or winnings × multipleKSh 200 at 40xKSh 8,000

Game contribution

Not every game counts in full. Slots usually count 100%, while table games often count 10% or nothing. At 10%, a KSh 1,000 bet clears only KSh 100 of the requirement. The bonus terms list the contribution of each game type and any excluded games.

What wagering costs at different RTPs

The average cost of wagering is the total you must bet × the house edge (100% − RTP). For a KSh 1,000 bonus on bonus-only terms:

Average cost = bonus × wagering multiple × (1 − RTP)
WageringTotal betsAverage cost at 94% RTPAt 96% RTPAt 97% RTP
10xKSh 10,000KSh 600KSh 400KSh 300

45xKSh 45,000KSh 2,700KSh 1,800KSh 1,350

The break-even point

A bonus is worth more than its wagering costs only while the multiple is below 1 ÷ house edge. At 96% RTP that is 1 ÷ 0.04 = 25x: a KSh 1,000 bonus at 25x costs KSh 1,000 to clear on average, exactly its value. At 97% RTP the break-even is about 33x, and at 94% it is under 17x.

Above break-even, the average player ends with less than the bonus. On deposit-plus-bonus terms the sum is harsher: KSh 2,000 × 30x is KSh 60,000 in bets, KSh 2,400 in average cost at 96%, against a KSh 1,000 bonus.

These are averages under a simple model. If your balance runs out before you finish, you stop betting, so you never pay the full cost; that is why a bonus above break-even is mostly lost money for most players and a win for a few. Treat it as extra play, and check the bonus terms before you count on a withdrawal.

Best slots for meeting wagering requirements

Pick slots that count 100%, are not on the excluded list, and have a high RTP. Within those, volatility decides how the session feels. Low and medium volatility tend to keep your balance alive through a long requirement; high volatility makes it more likely you bust early and less likely, but possible, that you finish with a large balance. The average cost is the same either way.

Few slots sit well above 96%: in our catalogue, 35 of the 890 slots with a published RTP (3.9%) reach 97% or more.

Bonus terms sometimes exclude high-RTP slots by name, so check the excluded games before you pick one. Playing an excluded game can void the bonus and its winnings.

How to claim and use a slot bonus

  1. Read the terms first: the wagering multiple and what it applies to, the time limit, game contribution, excluded games, the maximum bet while wagering, and any cap on what you can withdraw.
  2. Opt in: some bonuses need a code or a tick box at sign-up or in the cashier; without it the deposit plays as cash only.
  3. Make the qualifying deposit: check the minimum and which methods qualify, including M-Pesa and Airtel Money, in the casino's cashier and bonus terms.
  4. Keep to the maximum bet: a single spin above the limit can void the bonus.
  5. Track progress: the account or bonus page shows how much wagering is left and when it expires.
  6. Verify and withdraw: casinos usually check your identity before the first withdrawal, so have your documents ready.

When to turn a bonus down

You can always play without a bonus. That is often the better choice when the multiple is far above break-even, when wagering applies to deposit plus bonus, when the time limit is short for your usual play, or when the maximum bet is lower than you want to stake. Cash play has no wagering, so you can withdraw a win at once.

Bonuses do not change the odds of any spin. Set your budget in shillings first and decide on the bonus second; see our responsible gaming page for deposit limits and other tools. Bonuses are for adults 18+ only.
